Farmer Finds $15 Million in Silver and Gold From 1st Century BC

What would you do if you found $15 million? What you found ancient gold and silver coins that had been untouched for 2,000 years? It'd be even better than winning the lottery, right?

It'd be a life-changing dream come true and the adventure story of lifetime for sure. And for two guys in the island of Jersey, off the coast of Normandy, that's exactly what happened after three decades of meticulous soil sifting.

About 30 years ago, a farmer stumbled upon some old Iron Age silver coins when engaging in his usual work routine. Ever since then, he's had his sights set on even bigger finds... he'd heard tales and legends of great treasure in the area.

Earlier this year, he and a fellow treasure hunter friend found an impressive stash of 61 coins – all silver except for one gold coin. But the riches didn't stop there...

Now, he has finally found the treasure of lifetime. Buried in a big block of clay, Reg Mead and Richard Miles discovered approximately 30,000 to 50,000 Celtic coins – both gold and silver – dating all the way back to the 1st Century BC.

The story behind the coins includes a rather interesting tidbit of history as well, giving some good exposition to the farmer's story. Experts believe the coins were buried in the clay in order to keep Roman troops from getting to them during Julius Caesar's invasion of the British Islands. Numismatic experts say each coin is worth approximately $156 to $311. Not too shabby at all...

The public can now view theses coins by visiting the Jersey Heritage Museum. The museum conservator, Neil Mahrer, commented on this incredible discovery: "This is the biggest Celtic coin hoard ever found which is tremendously exciting."

And good news for all you treasure hunters out there: some historians and experts believe there may be more treasure to be found off the coast of Normandy...
