The FBI Foiled Their Own Plot to Bomb the Fed

Posted by - Thursday, October 18th, 2012

There is no doubt that Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis, the person the FBI arrested for attempting to blow up the Federal Reserve building, wanted to commit a terrorist act.

However, there is plenty to doubt about what he could, or would, have done if the FBI didn't create the entire plot for him.

According to the FBI, Nafis traveled to the US from Bangladesh in January. Once he arrived, he started looking for contacts within the U.S. to assist with an attack.

He claimed to be in contact with al Qaeda members overseas, although federal agents found no evidence that he was working for al Qaeda or that he was directed by the organization.

At this point, he discovered some accomplices that helped him create the plot. They were the undercover FBI agents that would subsequently provide him with the fake explosives and information he needed to create a bomb.

All of the equipment Nafis would use came from these agents. They gave him 20 50lb bags of fake explosives, They also gave him the cell phone he would use to “detonate” the device along with the van used in the attempt.

An agent was with him in the van and in the hotel where he “repeatedly, but unsuccessfully, attempted to detonate the bomb," the FBI said.

But what exactly would this man have accomplished without the FBI creating or providing everything he needed to actually commit a crime?

New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, whose department was part of the operation, objected to suggestions that Nafis' plans were crude and bumbling.

"I don't see how you characterize (him as) unsophisticated, I mean he was arrested, but he clearly had the intent to create mayhem here," Kelly told reporters.

Ultimately, The Federal government created the entire situation for the terrorist suspect. The threat to the Federal Reserve building never would have existed without the FBI agents getting involved.

In that sense, the FBI just found an untrained and misguided potential terrorist, created and facilitated his plot and then took credit for foiling the very plot they handcrafted.

This isn't the first time the FBI has created a terrorist plot that they then saved Americans from. The tactic has been used several times this year, and has become the default method for catching terrorists “in the act.”

Rolling Stone published an incredible expose that details exactly how law enforcement singles out some threats while leaving far worse groups virtually untouched. You can read it here.

I certainly don't doubt that we are safer with Nafis in custody, but I definitely doubt that a terrorist plot was foiled. Ultimately, the FBI just made their own propaganda to tout their efforts.
