Russia Would Use Military Forces to Defend Syria & Iran

Posted by Mike Tirone - Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

Russia is preparing to use military power to defend its national interests and former member of the Russian Joint Chiefs of Staff, Colonel-General Leonid Ivashov says the maneuvers are taking place.

When asked if the preparations conducted by Russia are designed for war or a military strike against Iran, Ivashov confidently replied that Russia is ready to use military actions, but none of which will be waged against Iran or Syria. Better yet, those two nations are considered “guaranteed partners of Russia. The only question, therefore, is who [the West and Israel] will try to destroy first as a stable country: Syria or Iran.”

The former joint Chief of Staff says that he assumes that the United States and Israeli governments draw specific connections between the situation in Syria and in Iran. Ivashov made it clear that Russia will do whatever it takes to protect its interests, therefore “a strike against Syria or Iran is an indirect strike against Russia.”

It looks as though the U.S. finds itself in another difficult situation, as political (aka oil) interests lie in the Middle East from dozens of countries. Iran continues to threatened to shut down the Strait of Hormuz, while the European Union has placed an embargo on Iranian oil imports. The tension continues to rise as quickly as the oil price projections have been due to this geopolitical hostility within the Middle East.

Ivashov believes that Russia would lose important positions and allies in the Arab world. “Therefore, by defending Syria, Russia is defending its own interests.”

Throughout Ivashov's interview with MEMRI TV on February 1st, he fails to say the words, “United States” but chooses his words aptly to show just what he means. In his final statement of the segment, the Col.-General made comparisons of the United States government's recent involvement in Libya to Adolf Hitler's Nazi armies invading across Europe and Russia:

“In addition, Russia is thus defending the entire world from Fascism. Everybody should acknowledge that Fascism is making strides on our planet. What they did in Libya is nearly identical to what Hitler and his armies did against Poland and then Russia. Today, therefore, Russia is defending the entire world from Fascism.”

It seems as though the Russia government is fed up with the sidings within the Middle East and is willing to take swift and stern action against anyone that attacks their allies in the region. Check out Ivashov's interview below:
