Gas Prices Increase More Under Obama Than Jimmy Carter

Republican strategists got some good news yesterday. Gas prices have increased at a rate not seen since another single term Democrat was in office.

Under Jimmy Carter, gas prices rose 103.77%. Under Obama, the rate is 103.79%, according to U.S. News.

Where is gas the most expensive? Interestingly enough, two cities associated with Obama, Hononlulu and Chicago, top the list.

Regardless of who or what is to blame for the high cost of gas, Republicans would be foolish not to point the finger at the sitting president. It will be an easy sell...

Even as unemployment remains high, gas prices can factor into people’s job search. With jobs being scarce, people have to look for work farther from home, and sometimes what they find isn’t worth the trouble.

“We are anecdotally seeing people say, 'I would like to take the job, but given the length of the commute, it's not enough money to cover the incremental cost of commuting,'" Tig Gilliam, CEO of a global recruitment firm told U.S. News. "[They] either need more money or need to continue to look for a job closer to home."

According to Politico, a Washington Post/ABC News poll found that a majority of voters consider Obama the more likeable candidate, but his main weakness appears to be the economy.

From Politico:

“A majority of those surveyed, 54 percent, continue to disapprove of the president’s handling of the economy and his response to high gasoline prices — but Obama leads in other key areas, such as handling international affairs, protecting the middle class and addressing women’s issues. Still, two-thirds of those surveyed believe that the country is on the wrong track, the poll found.”

Even the Huffington Post, traditionally friends of Obama, are poking holes in the President’s re-election bid

Many Republicans are preparing to hold their noses and vote for Mitt Romney, who is only five points behind the president.

To make matters worse for Obama, his job approval ratings don’t look like those of a guy about to be re-elected. They look like those of George H.W. Bush, or Mr. Malaise himself Jimmy Carter.

All of this, plus the controversial Supreme Court ruling on Super PCAs, sets the stage for an especially bitter election season. Both sides have already started rattling their sabers.

“We’re asking our supporters to invest now to allow us to build the largest grass-roots campaign in history,” according to Obama press secretary Ben LaBolt. “And we’ve made clear that we will not unilaterally disarm.”

He’ll likely need to keep that attitude to avoid slipping into Carter’s infamous “malaise.”
